Evans Contemporary is pleased to present CEREMONY, an exhibition of paintings by Brian Rideout as the debut show in our new, ground floor space in Bankers Common.

Brian Rideout  is a Toronto-based painter whose work investigates contemporary images, sourced from print and online, for their art historical relevance, as a continuation of the history of painting and image production. 
 

"Taken together, Rideout’s works comprise a narrative of art, architecture, and object following an undulating cycle of definition, utility, and design, softly dramatizing the multiple registers that art has come to occupy and employ over time as a material thing wholly existing in the world. Here we are chanced with art as document, as decoration, as ideological accessory, as technological or functional support. " -  Anastasia Howe Bukowski

 

Rideout studied at Georgian College (Barrie) and has had solo exhibitions at the Georgian College Campus Gallery (2016), Butcher Gallery (2012, 2010), 52 McCaul, Elora Centre for the Arts (2008), and Artspace (2008). Recent group shows include 'Unkempt' at MAW (NYC), 'Open House' at Sleep Center (NYC), '9 to 5' at Warner Gallery (Toronto), '8 The Esplanade' at White Condo (Toronto), 'The Agency of Aquaintances' at Clint Roenisch Gallery (Toronto), and 'Taking [A] Part' at Mercer Union (Toronto).

 

Opening on Friday, November 18th, between 6 - 11pm, the reception will run concurrently with the Bernie Martin exhibition and opening reception taking place at our upstairs venue on Hunter St. As with all Evans Contemporary's openings, charcuterie and wine will be provided. Guest dj performances, and video images will be taking place in the Commons. Hot, mulled cider will be provided outside and will be available by donation. All proceeds from the sale of cider will go to the YWCA Emergency Shelter. Bring cash, and please donate generously.

Additionally, ACME opens on the same evening with a new exhibition by John Boyle. This is a great opportunity to see three excellent exhibitions in the arts building.



BANKERS COMMON

Bankers Common is the courtyard of the Commerce Building. It is the parking lot and underused, neglected space behind Sapphire Lounge, Catalina's, St. Veronus, Le Petit Bar, Union Studio, and Needles in the Hay. Access to Bankers Common is through the carriage underpass (Passage des Arts) between 383 and 385 Water St. (between Catalina's on Water and Needles in the Hay.)
