Evans Contemporary is pleased to announce the launch of the 2013 season with an opening on Thursday, September 5th for Chicago painter, Isak Applin.

 

Chocorua, will showcase new paintings from Applin's repertoire of images and tales from the forests, fields and mill-towns of the American Northeast. Through his delicate and intricate use of colour, Applin's paintings investigate the lost legends, love, eccentric artists, and ghost stories unique to that hardscrabble and bewitching environment.

 

Chocorua will be Applin's first solo exhibition in Canada.

 

 

 

ISAK APPLIN

 

Isak Applin received his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. His numerous group exhibitions include show at  the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Edison College in Fort Meyers, Florida, the Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Amel Bourouina Gallery, Berlin, Germany, McCormick Gallery, Chicago, Fountain in Brooklyn, New York, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Michigan, The Studios of Key West, Florida, The Helm Gallery, Tacoma, Washington, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine. His solo exhibitions have been featured in Chicago at Comfort Station, Roots and Culture, Giftshop Project Space, and Contemporary Art Workshop.

 

Applin is the recipient of numerous awards and include grants from the Chicago Community Arts Assistance Program, Union League Civic & Arts Foundation Visual Arts Award, The Lawrence Sisson Traveling Fellowship in Florence, Italy and the Roger Brown House Residency in New Buffalo, Michigan.

 

His graphic works can be found in several permanent collections  and include the Boston Public Library Print Collection, Bates College Library Special Collections, Bowdoin College Library Special Collections, Mortimer Rare Book Room, Smith College, New York Public Library Special Collections, University of Delaware Library Special Collections, and Wellesley College Library Special Collections.

 

Since 2007, Applin has been an instructor in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
