JANNE LAINE

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE ORIGIN OF TIME AND THE END OF THE UNIVERSE

FEBRUARY 17 - MARCH 25, 2017

OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17,  6 - 11pm

Evans Contemporary is pleased to present Somewhere Between the Origin of Time and the End of the Universe an exhibition of prints by Finnish artist and master printmaker Janne Laine.

Using the traditional techniques of heliogravure, and aquatint, Laine produces works that exude mystic and romantic tendencies. A dreamlike apocalypse dominates Laine’s otherworldly, landscapes where questions of life and death unfold through the sophisticated subject matter. His minimalistic scale of colour creates the feeling of estrangement, and gives his work a sensation of timelessness.

Laine’s scenic images, shot throughout Finland and Iceland, epitomize the universal idea of landscape. The brooding works portray primordial forces in an interchange between dark potencies and eruptions of light. They move into the realm of mythology and lore, where one may be witnessing the birth of the universe, or quite possibly, its demise.
