Evans Contemporary is pleased to open it's new exhibition space and begin the art season with the presentation of work by Toronto artist, Sarah Jane Gorlitz.

Since 2002, Gorlitz has been working with the mediums of painting, collage, video, installation, and sculpture. Many of her paintings play with ideas of perception, memory, light and visual experience. Over the past number of years, Gorlitz has utilized found paintings, crystallized glass objects and her own visual encounters to produce luscious, and thought provoking works.

In her series titled, Backlit Paintings, Gorlitz reacts to decisions made by other artists, complications in the materials themselves, or changing conditions of light. These works are depictions of effects of light passing through found paintings, placed in a window. Here, these discarded, unskilled paintings change dramatically - cracks and tears no longer read as mere damage, other patterns emerge in the thickness of paint; meanwhile, the shadow of the stretcher reveals the painting's structure.

Gorlitz's work also includes the movement of colours and light from found images and the surrounding studio through glass objects, into her eye, and into memories, imagination, and paint and then back into the painting. The painted surface can be seen as something of the residue of this process, a possible point of contact between various different positions. Other works refer to the memory of an intense visual experience which develops as a series of variations, attempts to re-encounter this event over time, with each work becoming a relay point for the next.

SARAH JANE GORLITZ


Sarah Jane Gorlitz earned her BFA from the University of Waterloo and her MFA from Malmö Art Academy, Sweden.

In 2008 Gorlitz was a finalist for the RBC Painting Competition. Her paintings have been widely shown in Canada and internationally and include exhibitions at the Plug In Summer Institute, Winnipeg, Greusslich Contemporary in Berlin, BKS Garage in Copenhagen, YYZ Toronto, Kapitalistischer Realismus in Berlin, the University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Cambridge Galleries, and in Sweden at Galleri Arnstedt in Östra Karup, and KHM Gallery in Malmö.

Since 2006 she has collaborated on video projects with Wojceich Olejnik under the name Soft Turns. Their work has been widely exhibited in Canada and internationally and has been shown at the 17th International Contemporary Art Festival, Videobrasil (Sao Paulo), Southern Exposure (San Francisco), Kunstraum T27 (Berlin), Friends (Glasgow, Scotland), Elora Centre for the Arts, Dortmund Bodega (Oslo, Norway), Foreman Art Gallery at Bishop’s University (Sherbrooke), Soap Factory (Minneapolis), The National Museum in Wrocław, (Wrocław, Poland), and the Museum of Modern Art, (Moscow, Russia)

For her solo and collaborative work , Gorlitz has been awarded numerous grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts and was awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize and the Edstranska Stipend in Sweden. She has been artist in resident at Trinity Square Video in Toronto, USF Verftet in Bergen, Norway, and was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts Paris Residency at La Cité Internaionale des Arts in Paris.

Gorlitz currently lives in Toronto.

EVANS CONTEMPORARY'S NEW LOCATION

During the summer of 2015, Evans Contemporary moved out of it's domestic Avenues location and renovated it's new exhibition space on the third floor of 129 1/2 Hunter St West in the heart of Peterborough's thriving café and arts district. We are excited to launch our first exhibition in our new location with Sarah Jane Gorlitz. The September 18th opening will coincide with the start of Peterborough's Arts Week and Peterborough Pride. Numerous events will be taking place throughout the evening including a gallery crawl which includes the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Gallery in the Attic, Christensen Fine Art, Artspace and Evans Contemporary.

EVANS CONTEMPORARY

Evans Contemporary is dedicated to the presentation of creative projects by national and international contemporary artists. Located in Peterborough, Ontario, the gallery is situated on the third floor of a late Victorian building in the heart of the café and arts district. Its mandate is to launch contemporary exhibitions every four to six weeks and offer a unique space for special projects and new endeavours for each exhibiting artist, while allowing artists to present projects that transcend the trends of the commercial visual art market

Evans Contemporary falls just outside of the entrenched public and private gallery sectors. It is privately owned and operated, and runs as a negative profit exhibition space. Through its generous supporters and patrons, it serves to provide exceptional, contemporary exhibitions to a region underserviced by visual culture. The gallery serves as a rallying point for artists, cultural workers and art lovers of the Kawartha Lakes region. In addition to its physical exhibitions, and openings, Evans Contemporary coordinates online documentation and publications for each exhibition. Operating as an amalgamation of artist-run centre, museum, institute, and private foundation, Evans Contemporary fills a void in the cultural landscape of the region, plays an important role as a leader in the cultural fabric of Peterborough and the Kawartha region and stands as a signifying site of local culture.
