Evans Contemporary is pleased to present Heart of the Cave, an exhibition of new photo collage by U.S. artist Theresa Ganz.
Through her ongoing visual investigation of landscape, nature, architecture and ornament, Ganz's photo collage and installations link photography and materiality through the use of new technologies. Her process-based method questions the state of the photographic object in the digital age. Using digital stitching software and automation to create both large-scale panoramas and silver gelatin prints, Ganz photographs in ways that tax the software and introduce glitches in its ability to seamlessly stitch together individual shots. With this process, Ganz explores the possibilities of the essential constituents of the photograph - the indexical (the photograph points to something in the real world) and the material (the image is made of something whether it is photosensitive emulsion or pixels).
Using source material shot at the Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist temples at the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India, Ganz has created a series of collages of the man-made and natural marks that form the surface of the rock walls that surround the carved structures. Scale and focus shift throughout each composition, while tension exists between the realism of the photographic elements and the fabricated space of each collage. Ganz's rectangular shaped collages reference traditional photographs and trompe l’oeil stone slabs, while others evoke ecclesiastic art and architecture including a diptych, a stele and an altarpiece. The resulting work marries the rawness of the cave with the aesthetics of the baroque church to reference a commonality between these places as portals from the material to spiritual worlds.
THERESA GANZ
Theresa Ganz earned her BA from Vassar College in Film and her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in Photography.
Her photo-based collage and installation work has shown nationally and internationally and include exhibitions at the Datz Museum of Art in Korea, the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, Bell Gallery at Brown University, the Logan Center at the University of Chicago, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin and at various commercial spaces in New York and San Francisco.
Ganz's work has been featured in numerous print publications including Mousse Magazine, Outpost Journal and Magazine Gitz. She has been artist in resident at both the Banff Centre for the Arts and the Camera Club of New York.
Born in New York City, Ganz currently resides in Providence, RI where she is faculty at Brown University. She is a founding member and director at Regina Rex in Brooklyn.
EVANS CONTEMPORARY
Evans Contemporary is dedicated to the presentation of creative projects by national and international contemporary artists. Located in Peterborough, Ontario, the privately owned and funded gallery exhibits work by emerging, established, and unknown artists of all ages, as well as work from the gallery's private collection. Situated on the ground floor of a 1907 Edwardian house, the gallery's aim is to launch unique exhibitions in an intimate, salon style setting and allow artists to present new works and projects that transcend the trends of the commercial visual art market.
